I have always told stories and made pictures.

Paul (Pee Wee Herman) Reubens August 27, 1952 – July 30, 2023
"I know you are, but what am I?" Paul was very intense, private, and hilarious. He loved comedy, and the care and work he put into his performances was nothing short of astounding. Pee Wee didn't feel like a character. He felt like a person. An annoying and ridiculous person but a real person. Completely different from the erudite gentleman he was in reality. He reminded me of the super-serious Jerry Lewis out of character and his disdain for the "kid" character that made him a star. Paul seemed to love Pee Wee like the rest of us.
Michael J. Fox
This photo is not the "Buy" shot. This photo is the shot before the "Buy" shot. This man is a consummate professional, and he is struggling. But you wouldn't know it. I know it. And now you do, too. I usually wouldn't show it. But thanks to Michael's honesty and Davis Guggenheim's remarkable documentary, Still. We see how hard it is for him to stay positive when faced with an incurable disease. When I have difficulties and feel like I can't keep going, I think of this picture and the movie star smile that followed it, and I'm inspired to keep going.
The Unstoppable Misty Copeland.
You should google her because I can't do her justice. I was walking down a New York City street on recycling day—the super, or janitor, or whoever was throwing tied bundles of newspapers onto the sidewalk. I looked down, and this picture was in the arts section of the Boston Globe! Just looking up at me, I had to check. Yup, they even credited me and spelled my name right! I took a fair share of pictures of Misty one afternoon in Red Hook, New York. The top secret lair where the Ballets come together. She wasn't doing anything. I wasn't doing anything. I was all set up anyway.

John Gielgud
A long time ago, I was making a film about the horrors of goose liver paté with Karen Bellone and Lisa Rinzler. We shot the narration on the top floor of London's famed Groucho Club. We had a talent wrangler, and when Gielgud arrived, she exclaimed, "Oh, Sir John, you've arrived!" He responded, "Who were you expecting? Sir Edmund Hillary?" I shot the interview and a few choice images. This picture and a few slides escaped that massive flood that destroyed 75% of my negatives.
